# Publishing & hosting

> How a page goes live, what the URL is, and what hosting adds to it.

Building and previewing is free. Publishing an AI-built site needs the Maker plan or above. The exception is a site you [upload as finished code](/build/create#upload-your-own-code), which goes live on any account. Once a site is live, GetSite serves it through Cloudflare with SSL.

## Preview

Until a page is published it has a draft URL: `https://draft.getsite.online/<pageId>/`. Anyone with the link can open it. Drafts are never cached and never indexed.

## Publish

Nothing goes live until you publish. Click **Publish** on a page card or in the editor (**Republish** once the page is live), or **Publish site** / **Publish changes** on the site page. The first publish of a site asks for an address:

* a subdomain of **getsite.co** (default) or **getsite.online**: up to 32 lowercase letters, digits or hyphens, not starting or ending with a hyphen, unique under that domain, or
* a [custom domain](/features/domains) you have already added.

Later pages on the same site publish to the same address at their path. Sites built through [Zapier](/features/automations) publish on completion to a generated `getsite.online` subdomain; sites built through the [API](/developers/api) are published with a deploy call that defaults to `getsite.co`.

Publishing copies the page's current version to its live version and clears the cache. The change is visible right away. There is no rename. To move a site to another address, link another domain to it: a custom domain, or a new free subdomain from **Domains → Add a domain → Start with a free subdomain**. The new domain replaces the old one as the site's address, and the old subdomain stops serving.

## URLs

| | |
| - | - |
| Home page | `https://acme.getsite.co/` or `https://acme.com/` |
| Other pages | `https://acme.getsite.co/about` |
| Files | `/about/style.css`, `/about/script.js`, and anything under [Files](/build/site-settings#cms--files) |

`/about`, `/about/` and `/about/index.html` all serve the same page. `www.acme.com` and `acme.com` both serve the site if both resolve to GetSite; there is no redirect between them.

Only three files exist per page: `index.html`, `style.css` and `script.js`. Any other file is a 404 unless you uploaded it under Files.

## Added at serve time

Hosting injects these into published pages when it serves them. Changing them in settings takes effect on the live site without republishing. None of it appears in the editor or in draft previews.

* Title, description, keywords, canonical, Open Graph and Twitter tags from [page settings](/build/pages#page-settings)
* `noindex, nofollow` when the page's **Search indexing** switch is off
* [Integrations](/build/site-settings#integrations): analytics, pixels, chat widgets, head and body scripts
* The favicon at the standard paths
* The cookie banner and the generated `/privacy` page, if enabled
* The **Made with GetSite** badge, if enabled
* A reCAPTCHA widget on every form that posts to `/submit`
* GetSite's own analytics, conversion and A/B test scripts, and the CMS SDK when the site has collections

## The badge

Sites created on a free account carry a **Made with GetSite** badge in the bottom-left corner. Sites created while subscribed do not. Upgrading does not remove it from existing sites: turn it off under **Site settings → General → Remove the "Built with GetSite" badge**. Any paid plan can remove it. On a free account the toggle opens a one-time \$10 purchase for that site (labelled **Unlock downloads**) which also unlocks removal.

## robots.txt and sitemap.xml

Both are generated per domain from the indexing switches in [SEO & Indexing](/build/site-settings#seo--indexing) and the per-page overrides. The sitemap lists published pages only.

## Caching

`index.html` is revalidated by the browser on every load. CSS and JS are versioned (`?v=N`) and cached for a year. GetSite's own cache is cleared on every publish and settings save. A stale page after publishing is the browser's cache or, for at most a minute, a hosting node that missed the clear.

## 404

Unknown paths show GetSite's 404 page. Custom 404 pages are not supported. A domain with no site linked shows the 404 page, or a **Coming soon** page if you turn that on in the domain's settings.

## When a plan ends

Live sites stay online. You cannot publish changes, publish new pages, add domains or view analytics until you subscribe again. Pages keep their last published version.

## Not included

There is no download or ZIP export of a site. Version history in the editor is the rollback mechanism.
